Sharpen
your skills and become a qualified RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper
Preparation: 5 days intensive, advanced level
repetition to sharpen your skills before taking your
Exam. Since you’re already a competent and experienced
skipper there won’t be much teaching. Instead, one of
our senior instructors will coach you and give feedback.
You’ll be put through your paces and practice pilotage,
night navigation, close quarters manoeuvring under power
as well as under sail and any other areas that need
brushing up.
Required pre-exam experience: 30 days sea time,
2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours within
10 years prior to exam. If you hold an RYA Coastal Skipper
Practical course completion certificate the required
sea time is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400
miles and 12 night hours.
Exam: You will demonstrate you are a competent
Coastal Skipper before an independent, qualified RYA
Yachtmaster Examiner. Be prepared to answer questions
on any part of the Coastal Skipper syllabus and show
you can take full responsibility for the management
of the yacht, crew and the passages. Prove that you
are familiar with handling and other characteristics
of any sea vessel. It is acceptable if you may not have
had the opportunity to practice all aspects of the syllabus
under a range of different conditions
Required pre-exam certificates: Restricted Radio
Operator’s Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
Duration: 5 days preparation followed by 2 days
(4-10 hours per candidate) Examination.
